A father tragically lost his life while attempting to rescue his son and another teenager from the clutches of dangerous rip currents at Leentjiesklip Beach in Wilderness on Saturday afternoon, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The incident, which unfolded around 17:31 on 24 October, has left both families in mourning and serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of ocean currents.
According to Jonathan Britton, station commander of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Wilderness, the alarming situation arose when two local teenagers became stranded in the treacherous waters.
Recognising the danger, both fathers – the local man and a German national – dived into the surf to save their sons. Britton noted that the two families are friends, adding to the tragic circumstances of the event.
As emergency services were mobilised, NSRI rescue swimmers quickly entered the water. A 14-year-old German boy managed to swim to safety, after which he was assessed by NSRI medics before being handed over to paramedics.
Meanwhile, the local teenager, alongside his father, remained in peril as rescue efforts intensified.
In a coordinated rescue operation, NSRI launched two rescue crafts, ‘Ann Stratford’ and ‘Oscars Rescuer,’ into the turbulent waters.
Britton reported that the German father, along with the local teenager, was successfully rescued. However, the situation took a grim turn when the NSRI team discovered the lifeless body of the local father still submerged in the sea.
Despite immediate CPR efforts administered by both NSRI and paramedics, the father could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The tragedy witnessed at Leentjiesklip Beach has drawn sympathy from across the community, with NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon expressing heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
Following the incident, the surviving father and the two teenagers were transported to the hospital for further medical care and are currently recovering under the watchful eye of medical professionals.
Authorities have since opened an inquest into the tragedy, aiming to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident. ‘Our thoughts and care are with the families in this difficult time,’ Lambinon added.
