The ongoing taxi strike has caused disruptions, including incidents of violence and vehicle burnings, drawing concern from Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga.
The minister has called for a swift resolution and has taken steps to engage with stakeholders.
According to IOL, The Department of Transport has confirmed that discussions are scheduled with the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) and the City of Cape Town in response to the suspension of taxi services. The suspension has left thousands of commuters stranded, prompting the need for urgent action.

Transport Minister Chikunga emphasised the importance of a joint effort between national and provincial authorities to address the challenges posed by the strike. To facilitate a comprehensive solution, the minister has invited leaders from Santaco, at the provincial, local and national levels, to collaborate on finding viable paths forward.
In addition to urging a reconsideration of the service suspension, Minister Chikunga condemned the violence and vehicle burnings that have marred the strike.
Amid the ongoing strike, another distressing incident unfolded as Vanguard Hospital in Bonteheuwel was forced to close its doors due to escalating tensions.
The hospital became a target for protesters who stormed the facility on Thursday night, resulting in disruptions and staff members being subjected to harassment and attacks. The incident left hospital staff traumatised, highlighting the broader consequences of the strike beyond transportation.
Meanwhile, Western Cape MEC of mobility, Ricardo Mackenzie, expressed his hopes for Santaco’s return to negotiations. He underlined the importance of the minibus taxi task team and its role in addressing critical industry issues.
While acknowledging the complexities of the challenges faced by taxi operators, Mackenzie urged for a collaborative approach to finding lasting solutions.
Mackenzie commented, ‘While the solutions may not offer immediate fixes, we remain committed to addressing the broader transportation crisis. I trust that our national counterparts will prioritise industry formalisation and fulfil the commitments we have made.’
