South African comedian Trevor Noah recently found himself at the centre of a social media storm over reports of his involvement in a R33 million promotional video. However, Noah took to the airwaves to set the record straight during an interview on East Coast Radio.

In a candid conversation, Noah clarified that the situation had been blown out of proportion, and he emphasised that he wasn’t receiving a hefty sum for the video. He went on to shed light on the real story behind the headlines.
Contrary to media reports, Noah stated that there was no involvement from SA Tourism or the government in this matter. He said, ‘First of all, there is nothing with SA tourism. No one from SA Tourism approached me; there’s nothing from the government.’
So, what was the comedian really up to? According to Noah, he had been in discussions with hotel groups and tourism-related businesses, aiming to promote South Africa as a tourist destination. This endeavour is crucial for the country’s economy, as tourism is one of the most important contributors to its GDP.

In his signature humorous style, Trevor Noah couldn’t resist poking fun at the situation, expressing his wish to have the money that newspapers claimed he had received. ‘And then I wake up, guys, I wish I had all this money that these people gave me in these newspapers,’ he quipped.
Additionally, the Tourism Minister clarified that the R33 million funding for the promotional video would not come from taxpayers but would be a contribution from the Tourism Business Council of Southern Africa. This clarification was essential to dispel any misconceptions about public funds being used for the project.
