Brigadier Novela Potelwa says a 36-year-old police sergeant based at the Elsies River Police Station was driving on Solomon Tshuku Street in Site C at around 5:30pm when someone approached his vehicle and fired several shots. Although he was rushed to hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
About half an hour later, an off-duty officer from the Nyanga department was shot at Mandela Park in a suspected robbery.
‘The two police officials were in the prime of their lives. They still had a lot to offer to the communities of the Western Cape,’ says Major General Albert Maqashalala. ‘As the management of SAPS we will continue to keep the bereaved families in our thoughts and prayers.’
While no arrests have been made as yet, two murder dockets have been opened for investigation.
