The City of Cape Town’s councillor for Ward 56, Cheslyn Steenberg, explained that while the Golden Arrow bus was stationary at the intersection of Vliegtuig Avenue and Sunderland Street, some children inside the bus were playing and inadvertently leaned against the emergency exit. As a result of the pressure, the window became dislodged, leading to the fall of the two students.
Golden Arrow spokesperson Bronwen Dyke-Beyer confirmed the incident to Eyewitness News and reported that the company examined video footage of the incident. The bus was en route from Khayelitsha to Maitland.
According to Dyke-Beyer, the bus was at 40% capacity. The video footage shows some pupils playing rowdily while others were seated as per the company’s conditions of carriage.
