Passengers were left stranded on Saturday, 12 March, when Comair announced that SA Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) cancelled its flights due to an investigation into the “recent spate of safety incidents at the Operator”.
The ban was set to last 24 hours, during which SACAA wanted Comair to show that its risk and safety management systems can effectively manage potential hazards.
Following yesterday’s announcement, Comair snapped back at the SACAA, saying that there is “no justification for the suspension”. The operator added that it had already responded to concerns on Friday, but additional documentation was still required (hence the precautionary suspension).
This morning, Kulula and British Airways said that flights in South Africa should resume by midday today, Sunday 13 March. This will provide enough time to make arrangements to run the scheduled flights as normal as possible, Comair said in an update. However, this is yet to be confirmed.
As for those passengers left stranded, Comair said that it will “accommodate customers affected by Saturday’s suspension on other flights. It will also help those who can’t fly on Sunday rebook without penalties. It will keep customers informed via SMS”.
