A video that was widely circulated on social media has helped police in Muizenberg apprehend a suspect. The incident occurred on Sunrise Boulevard in Costa Da Gama, Muizenberg early last week.

The footage showed a woman walking along Sunrise Boulevard when she is approached by an unknown Mercedes Benz before being mugged.

In the video, two men watch the woman as she passes, and chase her down to grab her handbag. One of the assailants wrestles with her for a few seconds while the other makes their way to the waiting vehicles.

The incident is believed to have occurred on February 9, 2019.

Speaking to IOL, South African Police Services spokesperson, Colonel Andre Taut said that the video had helped Muizenberg police crack the case.

“On Tuesday, February 19, 2019, a robbery incident was reported to Muizenberg South African Police Service (SAPS), in which a young female resident of Vrygrond was attacked and robbed of her cellular telephone and bag. The video of the robbery, which went viral on social media, was studied by Muizenberg SAPS and assisted in the investigation,” he said.

Detectives traced the car to Blouberg and established the owner’s identity.

This resulted in the arrest of a 27-year-old suspect in Retreat last Friday morning.

The man was detained at Muizenberg police station and will remain there until he appears in court on Monday, 25 February 2019.
