The annual Safer Festive Season Inspection Tour saw Police Minister General Bheki Cele destroy tons of confiscated alcohol in Cape Town, ranging from beer to whiskey, rum and gin.
Bottles of alcohol were thrown down the drain after being confiscated by the SAPS from illegal establishments across the Mother City between October 15 and December 16.
This is according to Police Ministry Spokesperson Lirandzu Themba, who said that from April 1 – November 30 2021, over 150 000 litres of liquor have been destroyed.
“Majority of the booze was taken from the Nyanga, Milnerton, Khayelitsha, Delft, Harare, [and] Gugulethu policing precincts. These areas have also recorded the highest figures in violent crime,” Themba said in a Twitter post.
She went on to say that alcohol and drugs were involved in 3 695 of the assault GBH cases, while liquor and drugs were involved in 1 383 of the rape cases reported from July to September this year.
On the topic of illegal liquor traders in the Western Cape, Cele said “while we all appreciate that [alcohol] is a good social [lubricant]… it’s also one of the generators of crime”.
