On Sunday morning, two men were arrested after illicit cigarettes valued at R22 million were intercepted near the Joostenberg Weighbridge on the N1 in the direction of Cape Town.

According to Captian FC van Wyk, spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), members of the Anti-Economic Infrastructure Task Team and Provincial Extortion Task Team responded to information about a cargo truck transporting illicit goods from Johannesburg to Cape Town.

‘The information was operationalised and the relevant role players were mobilised for a joint operation and the truck was intercepted near the Joostenberg Weighbridge on the N1 direction Cape Town.’
Upon further investigation of the truck, the members discovered a large consignment of illicit cigarettes with an estimated street value of R22 million, to be delivered to a warehouse in Montagu Gardens.
Two men, aged 34 and 62, were arrested and detained at Kalpmuts SAPS on charges of possession and the transport of illicit goods. They will appear at the Paarl Magistrates’ Court once charged.
