The Western Cape has taken a significant step in augmenting its policing capabilities with the launch of the Festive Season Operations, where 175 new vehicles were handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS), Cape {town} Etc reports.
The initiative, welcomed by the Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, aims to enhance police visibility and response times, thereby ensuring improved service delivery to the province’s communities during the busy festive period.
Marais highlighted the critical importance of these additional vehicles, stating, ‘These additional vehicles were a much-needed boost to policing capacity, enabling greater police visibility, improved response times and more effective service delivery to communities across the province.’
Alongside the introduction of these vehicles, SAPS has committed to intensifying intelligence-led operations in identified crime hotspots.
This initiative, which will see close collaboration with the Cape Town Metro Police, Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP), and other law enforcement agencies, aims to disrupt criminal activities, apprehend wanted suspects, and target illegal firearms.
‘Strong cooperation between SAPS and other law enforcement agencies is essential,’ said Marais, emphasising the need for these resources to be used strategically for maximum impact.
As the festive season approaches, Marais urged community members to engage actively with law enforcement to foster safer environments. ‘I urge residents and visitors to play their part in keeping our communities safe. Share information about criminal activity with law enforcement, support crime-fighting efforts and remain vigilant,’ she stated.
Marais also stressed the importance of exercising caution and behaving responsibly during this time, reinforcing that safety is a shared responsibility that everyone must partake in.
