Compared with other South African provinces, the Western Cape has seen a drop in unemployment, with a decrease of 2.2% year-on-year.

This is according to Statistics South Africa’s (Stats SA) Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) on 20 February 2024, for the fourth quarter of 2023 (Q4), from October 2023 to December 2023.
The unemployment rate in the Western Cape from October 2023 to December 2023 was 20.3%, which is a decrease from 22.5% from October 2022 to December 2022.
As per the latest data, it is the largest decrease in the unemployment rate out of all the provinces recorded for that period.

In addition, the Western Cape has seen an employment increase of 23 000 during this period, according to a Stats SA media release issued on 20 February 2024.
Cayla Murray, Western Cape spokesperson for the Democratic Alliance (DA) on Finance, Economic Opportunities and Tourism, highlighted that the province boasts the lowest expanded unemployment rate, including discouraged job seekers, at 25.6%.
The expanded unemployment rate from October 2022 to December 2022 was 26.8%, with October 2023 to December 2023 being 25.6%, as per the statistical release.
This amounts to a decrease of 1.2% from the year-on-year change.
