It all began with a harmless tweet in July 2021. An X user by the name of Michaela Okland (@MichaelaOkla) unknowingly sparked a social experiment to see how much good a mere $2o can do in a South African city, in comparison to the USA) by posting ‘if someone sent me $2 000 I think I’d be less stressed’.
Cape Town attorney Neil Bensch responded with ‘same, but like $20 would make me less stressed even because I’m from South Africa and our currency is useless’ and amusingly added a PayPal link.
A curious USA concert photographer, Tim Castleman entered the chat, asking ‘I’m curious, what would $20 US get you in South Africa?’ to which Neil went on the express that $20 (at that time) equated to R350, which could be used to buy an array of things depending on how smartly one used it.
For the sake of relatability, Neil added: ‘Weird comparison, but you could also buy about ten Big Mac medium meals here with that much’, which led to the start of the wholesome transaction.
Tim then challenged Neil to an unexpected challenge. He offered to send $20 to buy the ten Big Mac meals if Neil promised to prove it on the social media platform. He also said Neil could have free reign to do what he wanted with the meals.
Neil agreed to the mission, posted the proof and went on to distribute some Mc’lovin to those less fortunate in his area.
