According to the Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR), the 63-year-old foreign national had planned to hike down Table Mountain. He reportedly departed from the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway’s upper cableway station shortly before 3pm on Friday.
Sometime later, he called to notify the station that he was lost and that he intended to return to the upper cableway station. However, he did not return.
He was reported missing after numerous failed attempts to contact him.
WSAR teams and a drone from the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness EMS drone unit were dispatched along the trails of his last known location. The search yielded no results and was suspended.

On Saturday morning, a large, multi-agency search including technical rescuers, hikers, trails-runners, SANParks rangers, City of Cape Town law enforcement officers, members of the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Water Policing and Dive Services, the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness EMS drone unit and the K9 Search And Rescue commenced on the trails.
Shortly before 12:30pm, the K9 dog named Sage picked up the hiker’s trail and led her team to a point below Fountain Ledge. From here, they were able to spot him.
He was unfortunately found deceased.

His remains were placed into a stretcher and hoisted up to a rescue helicopter from the Western Cape Department of Health & Wellness EMS / Air Mercy Service (AMS). From there, he was flown to a nearby landing zone and handed over to SAPS members.
The WSAR reminds outdoor lovers to memorise the emergency number: 021 937 0300.
