A 42-year-old cleaner has been arrested after police allegedly intercepted a consignment of drugs and other contraband at the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court, with a subsequent search of his office uncovering additional suspected narcotics and multiple mobile phones.
The arrest followed intelligence received by Wynberg police about an alleged plan to hand contraband to a detainee at the court on Monday, 28 September.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), officers went to the court at about 07:30 after receiving information about the suspected handover.
Police allege they caught the cleaner in the act and seized a bag containing 88 mandrax tablets, 10 packets of tobacco, seven packets of crystal meth and five packets of dagga.
A cellphone containing two SIM cards and a charging cable was also seized, with the 42-year-old man arrested on suspicion of possessing illegal drugs.
The investigation did not end with the arrest.
On Tuesday, 29 September, Wynberg SAPS members searched the suspect’s office inside the court building.
SAPS said officers found a bag allegedly belonging to the suspect. Inside, they reportedly discovered another 402 mandrax tablets, 41 sachets of crystal meth, one packet of cocaine and five packets of dagga.
The search also resulted in the seizure of 14 cellphones containing 16 SIM cards from various networks, together with two cellphone chargers.
Police booked the bag and its contents as exhibits as the investigation proceeds.
