Zandile Christmas Mafe – the man, or the myth associated with Parliament’s burning? At this point, no one is quite sure. On the surface, he was presented as a homeless man to the court, before it was revealed he is actually a resident Khayelitsha.
As time beats on, more is being uncovered regarding the ‘mastermind’. Neighbours have spoken out about Mafe and noted that he exhibited strange behaviour – including the likes of being anti-social, choosing to climb through his fence instead of going through the gate and being absent for the past month. His family defends that he wouldn’t harm anyone, not even when he was a young boy in school.
Many South Africans have also taken to social media to express their confusion, conspiracy theories, defence and scepticism surrounding Mafe’s connection to the burning of parliament.
Here is what some people are saying as Zandile Mafe’s name continues to trend:

Minister De Lille confirmed the CCTV cameras were working Sunday morning. We would like to see video evidence of Zandile Mafe in the parliament precinct and also starting the fire that destroyed parliament. Something doesn’t add up here and we can’t keep quiet. pic.twitter.com/Sm59FWgKy1

Let’s say Zandile Mafe did it. The fact that he was taken in without any evidence says alot about how suspects which look poor get treated.

The injustice that the state is infliction on Zandile Mafe is the kind of injustice that should anger us to act…#FreeZandileMafe #JusticeForMafe pic.twitter.com/qWj8CfsE4Y

I’ve been wondering how it was possible to quickly arrange a private lawyer for the homeless Zandile Mafe thus removing him from state Legal Aid where there was risk of a confession.I’m curious what those who are 100% sure he is innocent know that we do not know #ParliamentAttack https://t.co/v0htc8yU13
