In mid-February 2023, a video of a cat being abused was widely circulated on social media.
The video footage showed a male animal abuser throwing the cat, named Kittie, over the roof of a house. The abuser and the person recording were heard laughing in the video.
In addition to smiles and laughter, the video was shared with ‘laughing face’ and ‘fire’ emojis. The clip was screen- recorded and shared on social media by a member of the public in an effort to assist the SPCA.
The animal organisation then launched an investigation to trace the suspect and ensure justice was served.
Shortly after, inspectors of the SPCA and officers of the City of Cape Town law enforcement arrested the 17-year-old suspect and his accomplice in Hanover Park. The two were charged with animal cruelty under the Animals Protection Act (71 of 1962).
The abuser and accomplice were not the owners of the cat. The owners were only made aware of the incident after the video went viral on social media.
After the traumatic event, the young male Kittie, under one year old at the time, survived the incident and was taken in for a full medical examination and care by the animal organisation.
