This month, members of the Cape Animal Welfare Forum (CAWF) kicked off the annual City-funded Mass Animal Sterilisation Project (MASP) in Macassar and Eerste River.
This initiative marks the culmination of a decade-long partnership between the City and CAWF, dedicated to sterilising pets in designated areas to combat the issue of unwanted litter and promote the overall well-being of animals.
Since the inception of this project in 2013, a total of 14 842 animals have undergone sterilisation procedures, amounting to just over R6 million in funding.

The City noted that this year’s MASP carries particular significance as it commemorates a decade of tireless efforts in support of animal welfare.
It also emphasises the commitment and support of all parties involved in recognising the link between animal welfare and community health and development initiatives.
Karen de Klerk, chairperson of CAWF, expressed her gratitude, saying, ‘This year’s MASP is a positive intervention in support of healthier communities and will reduce unwanted litter substantially, thus reducing the heavy burden placed on welfare organisations around the Metropole.’

Councillor Patricia Van der Ross, mayoral committee member for community services and health, conveyed the City’s pride in the enduring partnership with the animal welfare sector.
She highlighted the remarkable progress achieved over the past decade and looks forward to yet another successful mass sterilisation campaign.
