Ask most visitors what brings them to Mont Rochelle, and they’ll say the wine, the views, maybe the jazz on a Saturday night. Few mention the spa, which is exactly the point. Behind the vineyard tours and cellar tastings sits a small, unhurried spa that most guests only stumble upon once they’ve already fallen for everything else.
It’s open daily, 09:00 to 19:00, to hotel guests and day visitors alike, and it’s deliberately restrained: no menu of fifty treatments designed to overwhelm, no attempt at scale. Every treatment uses Africology’s plant-based, essential oil-led products, and the setting (mountain air, vineyard views) does a good deal of the work itself.
The signature treatments read like a small tour of the continent. The Cape Malay Spice Journey is a warm, Vedic-inspired ritual built around the spice blends of the Cape Malay kitchen, 90 minutes of slow, deliberate work that leaves you smelling faintly of cinnamon and cardamom.
The Soul of Africa Body Journey uses marula oil, prized across southern Africa for centuries for its skin-nourishing properties, in a hydrating ritual that’s become something of a favourite among returning guests.
For those after something more targeted, the Nature’s Stem Cell Facial is built around cell renewal, while the Shaman’s Healing Journey brings crystal work and energy balancing into the mix for guests who want their 90 minutes to do more than relax the shoulders.
Beyond the treatment menu, the spa also offers Reiki and chakra balancing for guests drawn to that kind of work, along with the beauty essentials (manicures, pedicures) that round out a proper spa day. A number of the speciality rituals support the Kusasa Project, a local NGO, which means a treatment here does a small amount of good beyond the obvious.
None of which would matter half as much without somewhere worth staying afterwards, which is where the hotel itself comes in. 26 rooms sit within the main building, each looking out over vineyards or mountains, and for those travelling as a group or wanting more privacy, The Manor House, a private four-bedroom villa a ten-minute walk from the main hotel, offers an entirely separate stay within the same estate.
Either way, the appeal of a Mont Rochelle weekend has always been how little you need to plan once you arrive. Breakfast on the terrace, a wander through the vineyards, an afternoon given over entirely to the spa, dinner at MIKO with its own valley views. Repeat as needed.
