The Cape Town Cycle Tour, the world’s largest timed bicycle race, will take place on Sunday, 10 March 2024. Choose between the 109-kilometre and 42-kilometre routes and experience the spirit of a day when bicycles rule the road.
This year marks the Cape Town Cycle Tour’s 46th anniversary, and a dedicated group of riders return year after year to enjoy a day of two-wheeled freedom in one of Africa’s busiest cities.
Entries for this year’s event are set to close on Wednesday, 31 January 2024, so here’s all there is to know about the routes and how to register:
109-Kilometre race: The classic route
On the second Sunday of each March, cyclists experience the best of the Mother City with the safety of fully closed roads and the on-route support of the Cape Town Cycle Tour’s beneficiaries, the Pedal Power Association and the Rotary Club of Claremont.
The 109-kilometre route takes cyclists through the Southern Suburbs, along the False Bay coast and past the puzzled penguins of Simon’s Town.
The Cape Point Nature Reserve marks the halfway point, after which riders can cool off in Scarborough and Misty Cliffs before catching sight of the world-famous Chapman’s Peak Drive.
The final ascent of the day, Suikerbossie, is one of the route’s legendary challenges, followed by descents through Camp’s Bay and Clifton and culminating in Green Point.
42-Kilometre race: Half the effort, all the spirit
The 42-kilometre event was successfully launched in 2023, allowing thousands of cyclists who are not yet ready for the full lap to enjoy the sights and sounds of the city.
Far from a mundane meander along a closed motorway, participants in this race enjoy the vineyards of Constantia and the cooling Newlands Forest on their return without missing any of the festivities that the 109-kilometre event riders experience.
Refreshment stops, fully closed roads and superb spectator support make either option a safe and enjoyable way to spend the day on your bike.
The views of the sea, mountains and wildlife make it one of the most beautiful mass-participation rides ever, regardless of the length of the route chosen.
