In a showdown at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) third-place play-off, South Africa’s Bafana Bafana emerged victorious against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in a nail-biting penalty shootout.
Captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams stole the show once again, leading his team to secure the bronze medal in a tense match held in Abidjan.
After a goalless draw during regulation time, the match went into penalties, where Williams saved crucial spot kicks from Chancel Mbemba and Meschack Elia. Siyanda Xulu’s successful conversion ultimately sealed the deal for South Africa, securing their victory with a 6-5 win on penalties.

South Africa’s journey to third place saw them make three changes to their lineup from the previous match against Nigeria, with Nkosinathi Sibisi, Thapelo Morena and Mihlali Mayambela stepping in.
Although DR Congo posed a threat with their attacking, South Africa’s defense held strong, with Williams making crucial saves to keep his team in the game. The Congolese side, despite creating several opportunities, failed to capitalise on their chances, allowing South Africa to maintain a solid defensive stance.
With this victory, South Africa maintains a perfect record in third-place play-offs, having previously grabbed third position in the tournament 24 years ago against Tunisia.
