This opportunity aims to seamlessly integrate recycling into daily life, transforming it from a mere utility to a positive behavioural influence.
‘As we stand at a crossroads where creative talents can significantly impact the future of the planet,’ says Decorex Africa’s executive creative director, Bielle Bellingham.
‘It’s time to channel ingenuity beyond the realms of conventional home furnishings – beyond another chair, couch, or sideboard – towards a cause that can alter the course of environmental conservation in South Africa: a simple recycling bin.’
‘This isn’t just about creating another household item; it’s about using design as a powerful tool to shape environments, and influence societal habits in the interest of a sustainable future,’ Bellingham adds.
‘Designers have a profound responsibility to consider the entire system within which their creations exist, reflecting both social and moral considerations in their work.’

According to Bizcommunity, this initiative is an opportunity to reconsider how design talents can promote sustainability and responsibility. By leveraging these skills, designers can actively contribute to making a real impact.
Submissions should reflect sustainability in every aspect, from production to disposal, not just in their functionality.
‘It’s a crucial challenge that won’t necessarily be easy, but together, Decorex Africa believes a future can be designed in which sustainability is not just an option but a cherished standard,’ says Bellingham.
A panel of five top designers will judge the entries, and the best five designs will be featured at Decorex Cape Town and Johannesburg. Designers need to make prototypes and handle logistics. If they can’t, Decorex Africa will exhibit their drawings. Afterwards, designers can take orders for their bins at the show.
The deadline for proposals is 1 April 2024.
