Choosing products thoughtfully is an important way to do your part in helping the environment. Here are five sustainable South African beauty brands you should look out for:
1. Plaiin
Plaiin was founded only three years ago, and is a fully plastic-free beauty brand. In line with the zero-waste movement, each product they make is hand formulated with all-natural and vegan or vegetarian ingredients.
Plaiin’s intention is to create “skin food” rather than “skincare”, meaning that their food-grade ingredients make all of their products technically edible.
The packaging Plaiin uses is 100% plastic-free, as the business is actively dedicated to finding ways of non-plastic packaging.

2. CHILL Cape Town
CHILL Cape Town is a wellness natural skincare brand that looks to turn daily self-care routines into moments of peace. The owner, Aiwekhoe Iyahen, believes skincare should place emphasis on pure, gentl, all-natural and nourishing ingredients.
CHILL Cape Town is fully vegan, using only natural ingredients that have been grown and sourced primarily in South Africa.
All of the business’ packaging is made from glass or recycled paper.

3. SKOON
SKOON is a Cape Town-based business that was founded eight years ago by Stella Ciolli. The brand was born out of an intention of good formulation and manufacturing practices.
SKOON believes in feeling happy and healthy in the skin you’re in, and uses familiar South African flora in their products: rooibos, honeybush and buchu.
The EWG verified (Environmental Working Group) business produces products without parabens, microbeads, synthetic colours and fragrances, formaldehyde or silicones.

4. KHWEEN SHEBAR
Khween Shebar is an all-natural soap studio that focuses on conscious, ethical and natural skincare. The business primarily uses shea butter, hempseed oil and olive oils in their “cold process” – a way of making soaps in which no cooking or melting is involved.
Raw ingredients are better preserved in cold process soaps, making the products more beneficial to both the skin and hair. All of the products are chemical, artificial fragrance and preservative free.
Khween Shebar intentionally uses no palm oil in their soaps, and makes an effort to package the soaps in biodegradable paper and reusable jars.

5. Jane
Jane is a body and haircare brand that offers “humanmade” products – a range of shampoo bars, lotion bars and lip balms that have fewer ingredients than most skincare products and contain no harmful chemicals.
This is a great beauty brand to use when you want to be sure of exactly what is going into your body and onto your skin.
Jane products are made from a minimal number of natural ingredients to keep things simple. Their packaging is designed to be recycled or brought back to be refilled.
