Participants can choose from over 10 workshops led by passionate facilitators. These workshops cover a wide range of skills, including woodcarving, friction firemaking, amaXhosa basketry, San teachings, forging and more.
The Earthskills Gathering celebrates South Africa’s rich multi-cultural heritage crafts. It brings together craft, outdoor and earth-skills enthusiasts to learn and honour these ancient skills.
The event’s inception in 2019 was no coincidence; it coincided with South Africa’s annual Heritage Day celebration, emphasising the importance of understanding a place through its people’s crafts.
This gathering also recognises the importance of passing on these skills to future generations. Youth programmes include skills-based workshops for ages 8 to 14, focusing on bush skills, games and activities. For ages 3 to 7, there are play-based workshops that inspire exploration and wonder through craft and nature-based activities.
Besides workshops, the Earthskills Gathering offers a holistic experience. Participants can relax around the fire in the evenings, sharing stories and music while enjoying wholesome meals in a community setting. Scenic walks and river swims are also available during free time.
In 2023, the event introduces Community Tickets to support access for participants from under-resourced communities. This initiative aligns with the spirit of inclusivity and sharing that underpins the Earthskills Gathering.
