Administered by Smart Procurement World and funded by the City, the 2024 programme is designed to foster targeted buyer-seller connections, connecting small businesses with clients across the province, country and continent over an eight-month period.
Alderman James Vos, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, emphasises the City’s commitment to supporting initiatives like the Smart Supplier Programme.
Acknowledging the foundational role of small businesses in economic development, job creation and innovation, Alderman Vos believes that initiatives like these equip businesses with the skills needed for sustainable growth.

Participants in the Smart Supplier Programme undergo a thorough step-by-step development process, refining their consumer engagement strategies. The overarching goal is to enhance their performance, success and profitability in the business landscape.
Qualifying criteria for participation:
- Must be based in Cape Town
- Owned by a South African citizen
- In operation for a minimum of 18 months
- Registered as a City Vendor
- Willing and able to attend online and in-person training and networking sessions
Since its inception in 2016, more than 2500 businesses have benefited from the programme. Over the eight-year period, 1800 buyer opportunities were created for the 140 finalists, resulting in an estimated R20 million in business opportunities, including contracts with major retail and financial clients.
Alderman Vos expresses confidence in the growing strength of these businesses and the employment opportunities they generate.
