Ladles of Love, the non-profit organisation dedicated to alleviating hunger and poverty, is once again leading the charge in celebrating Mandela Day and inviting everyone to join in making a difference.
Ladles of Love is known for its impactful initiatives and last year’s Mandela Day was no exception. The organisation simultaneously organised world record-breaking attempts at two premium venues in South Africa: Nelson Mandela Square in Johannesburg and the Cape Town International Convention Centre in Foreshore.
Over 88 000 food cans were placed across the two cities by volunteers who worked tirelessly to bring the mosaics to life. By the late afternoon of 18 July, 2022, it was announced that the number of food cans and square metreage of the existing world record had been exceeded.
But Ladles of Love’s efforts extended far beyond the mosaics. Over 2 000 people volunteered their 67 minutes in various activities designed to provide relief to those in need.
Vegetables were chopped, resulting in over 3 tonnes of produce. Volunteers also made 125 000 sandwiches at various sponsored corporate events and hundreds of squares were knitted to create blankets for those in need.
‘We can only do what we do because of your support and sponsorship. Together we achieved the impossible. Thank you. In the true spirit of Mandela Day, we collaborated and made magic happen,’ expressed Danny Diliberto, founder and director of Ladles of Love.

Now, Ladles of Love is calling on you to volunteer 67 minutes of your time and help set an Ubuntu World Record by participating in activities aimed at nourishing, nurturing and growing children in need.
By purchasing a ticket (priced at R150 for adults and R100 for pensioners and students), you can contribute to making a tangible difference in the lives of children in Early Childhood Development Centres in impoverished communities.
The activities will take place at the OZCF Market Love Fest from 5pm to 9pm, featuring performances by Kyeezi, DJ Loyd, The Rivertones, TurnT and Kristi Lowe throughout the day.
Activities at the market include spreading sandwiches, planting edible seeds and crafting educational toys. There will also be opportunities to fill jars of hope, pack kids essentials, create carers hampers, collate colouring books and participate in packing for beneficiaries at The Lookout.
Group bookings, CSI donations, sponsorships and product partnerships for Mandela Day can be arranged by contacting [email protected].
Mandela Day is a time to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela and celebrate the power of collective action. Join Ladles of Love and be part of the movement that brings communities together to create a better world.
As Mandela said, ‘There is nothing quite like South Africans coming together on Mandela Day to help those less fortunate than themselves. What happens is magical – you see ubuntu fuel team spirit and make the impossible, possible.’
