Who doesn’t enjoy free things? If you love nature and you’ve added a few of South African National Parks’ (SANParks) picturesque destinations to your adventure bucket list but just haven’t had the chance to tick them off yet, you’re in luck.
SANParks will be presenting its 18th annual SA National Parks Week from 16 to 24 September 2023 (just in time to enjoy colourful wildflower fields and warmer weather) and will once again include weekends at some of the national parks.

Each year under the theme ‘Know Your National Parks’, SANParks waves entry fees goodbye and allows eager day visitors to enter most of the 21 national parks across the country between Monday and Friday (and the two weekends, for some).
If you’re excited to view the wildflowers of Namaqua National Park or the tuxedo’ed African Penguins of Boulders Beach, you may be a little disappointed as entry fees for these will remain as is.
But with our beautiful country being as bountiful as it is, there’s still so much on offer. Here are a few national parks to check out this SA National Parks Week
- Table Mountain National Park
- West Coast National Park
- Garden Route National Park
- Agulhas National Park
- Karoo National Park
And if travel is on the list, this is an ideal time to check out Addo Elephant National Park, Mokala National Park and Kruger National Park.

In line with the SANParks vision statement of ‘A Sustainable National Park System Connecting Society’, the initiative is aimed at cultivating a culture of pride in all South Africans in their relationship with our country’s natural, cultural and historical heritage.
‘This initiative aims to give the public an understanding of the role that SANParks plays as custodian of the country’s natural heritage. If we are to create a sense of ownership of the natural heritage of South Africa in all South Africans must be able to have access to such,’ said SANParks CEO, Hapiloe Sello.
‘Visit a national park this year for free during SA National Parls Week, to see what it has to offer and do your part by getting to know your national parks, celebrate your rich heritage offering and experience first-hand the iconic beauty and plethora of natural flora and fauna.’
