The 2023/24 cruise liner season has officially opened, with 175 confirmed vessel arrivals set to bring an estimated 166 933 passengers to South African port cities through its commercial seaports.
The season’s inauguration was marked by the arrival of the Vasco da Gama’s maiden voyage at the Cape Town Cruise Terminal – voted Africa’s Leading Cruise Port in the 2023 World Travel Awards.

The cruise liner docked in Cape Town after completing a 24-day voyage that started in Lisbon, Portugal. The ship is expected to dock for two days before departing on a 15-day trip from Cape Town to Port Louis, Mauritius, docking along the South African coastline.
Last season saw about 145 000 two-way passengers visiting the Cape Town Cruise Terminal, representing the biggest cruise season the passenger terminal has experienced to date.
This season, Transnet National Ports Authority confirmed 175 scheduled cruises to visit South African commercial seaports. Cape Town is set to welcome 59 ships, 33 for Durban, 28 scheduled for Gqeberha, 25 for Richards Bay, 22 will sail into Mossel Bay and eight for East London.
