Residents of a serene Penlyn Estate neighbourhood were startled when a man purportedly held his family captive.

The unfolding drama occurred on Eastview Street Wednesday morning, with a 51-year-old man allegedly detaining his wife and granddaughter.
A source told the Daily Voice that this incident transpired around 8am, stemming from an apparent domestic disagreement within the household.
Neighbours were alarmed upon hearing ‘uncontrollable screaming’ emanating from the premises, prompting them to swiftly notify the authorities.
According to a source, law enforcement and a hostage negotiator made efforts to de-escalate the situation, eventually necessitating a special unit to breach the property and rescue the victims. The source details that upon the woman’s departure from the house, evident injuries marred her face, arm, and neck, while the suspect resisted arrest with verbal and physical aggression.
The informant recounts witnessing the wife’s emergence onto the street, visibly bearing the signs of physical assault. During his apprehension, the suspect reportedly used derogatory language and exhibited violent behavior.
The status of the man’s armament remains uncertain.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg corroborates the account, stating, ‘Based on reports, the husband held his family captive during a domestic altercation. The 52-year-old wife and granddaughter were safely rescued, while the 51-year-old husband faces charges of attempted murder.’
The suspect is anticipated to make a court appearance at the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court following formal charges.
In the interim, both the woman and the minor child were transported to a medical facility for necessary treatment.
Residents expressed profound shock over the incident, given the neighbourhood’s typically tranquil atmosphere.
One resident recounted waking up to the disturbance around 8am, marking it as the first of its kind in the area. The resident noted the couple’s recent arrival to the neighbourhood, suggesting they had been there for just over a month and had limited interactions.
A female resident described the events as traumatic and unsettling, leaving a sense of insecurity that pervaded the community.
Lansdowne Community Policing Forum chairperson Rafique Foflonker emphasised the rarity of such occurrences in the precinct, pledging support for the affected family through trauma counselling and ongoing assistance post-hospitalisation.
