The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed that Stephanus van der Westhuizen, one of the three white men charged with assaulting two black teenage boys at the Maselspoort Resort & Conference Centre in Bloemfontein on Christmas Day, has received a sentence subsequent to his guilty plea for common assault.

The victims and their families were celebrating Christmas at the Maselspoort Resort & Conference Centre last year when the two young boys were attacked by van der Westhuizen, Jakobus Klaasen and Johan Nel because they were ‘not allowed in the pool reserved for white people.’

As reported by IOL, Phaladi Shuping, the spokesperson for the Free State NPA confirmed that a man named van der Westhuizen (47) admitted his guilt on Monday for the offence of common assault. As a result, he received a sentence of either a R4 000 fine or 12 months of imprisonment.
Phaladi further mentioned that van der Westhuizen expressed his apologies to the children and their father, who accepted his apology. He also extended his apologies to the general South African public.
The hearings for Jakobus Klaasen and Johan Nel were postponed until 3 July 2023 for consultations.
