‘I had to react because there were some [people] shouting,’ Rasta Ronnie, as he prefers to be called, told News24 on Thursday.
Kurt Opp shared the CCTV footage to TikTok on Wednesday, showing Ronnie tripping the fleeing thief, who then falls and skids across the floor.
Security guards at the exit rush to close the doors, trapping the robber inside, with Ronnie hot on his tail.
In less than 24 hours, the video had over a million views.
‘We’re situated in a hotspot area. Guys are getting robbed, manipulated and threatened on a daily basis,’ Opp, a Parow local, said in the report.
He continued, ‘So, management, staff, and even customers are on high alert. We don’t turn a blind eye to any crime. We always help where we can.’
His frustration with crime drove Ronnie to apprehend the phone thief. He says he has seen firsthand how crooks target customers, which has a negative impact on the store. Ronnie explained that a man stole a phone from the counter while a customer inquired about something.
Spar was reportedly approached by News24 for comment on the incident, but no response was received at the time of publication.
