We sat down with pitbull guru and rescuer Robyn Bronkhorst from Pit Pals in Melkbosstrand, Cape Town, to debunk the terrible myths that follow this beautiful breed.
Pit Pals is committed to rescuing and rehabilitating pitbulls and other power breeds, including but not limited to, bull terriers and the staffordshire bull terrier.
Pit Pals is dedicated to educating the public on how to treat and love animals in general while focusing on pitbulls and educating the public on how to deal with the breed properly and to show the people, including kids, that dogs are sentient beings, and not someone’s property to do with as they please.
Let’s work together to save these misunderstood munchkins from unnecessary cruelty and violence.
Here are five pitbull myths debunked:
Myth 1: Pitbulls have a bad temperament
Pitbulls do not have “bad” temperaments. Yes, some are feistier than others, but this is the case with all breeds (and humans, too).
Myth 2: Pitbulls are not affectionate
No! Unaffectionate pitbulls are ones that come from backgrounds of neglect and abuse. Other than that, you’ve got a 30kg lapdog ready for a lifetime of cuddles.
Myth 3: Pitbulls make bad family pets
Nope, not the case. But as always, every dog breed needs to be considered for every family type. If you have your heart set on a pittie, it’s a lifelong commitment because they are so highly intelligent, need stimulation and exercise, and some training.
Myth 4: It’s unsafe to get a rescue pitbull
FALSE! Pit Pals has a great track record of successfully rehoming adult pitbulls that have gone on to become amazing family members.
Myth 5: Pitbulls can lock their jaws
What? No! People assume this incorrectly. Yes, they are stronger than some other breeds out there, so their jaw will be harder to open, but no, they do not ‘lock’.
