Feeling tired? You’re not alone. According to a recent Google Trends report, it seems like the entire world is in need of some serious shut-eye.
In a report published by Vice and shared on Instagram, it was unveiled that the phrase ‘I am tired’ has reached its highest point in Google Trends history.
Since Google Trends began recording search data in 2004, this phrase has been steadily gaining popularity – much like a ‘wildly successful stock,’ as Vice puts it. But in this case, it’s not stock prices that are soaring; it’s our collective desire for restful sleep.
A quick analysis on Google Trends shows that the term ‘I’m tired’ experienced its most recent peak in searches in September, with South Africa ranking in the top 5 countries for searching this phrase.
Joining the tired club are countries like Brunei, the Philippines, Jamaica and the United States.
Furthermore, Google Trends reveals that related queries include ‘tired meme,’ ‘I’m really tired,’ ‘why I’m so tired’ and ‘I’m very tired.’

It’s not just about finding the root cause of this shared exhaustion; we’re also expressing our fatigue in the most relatable way we know – through memes.
So, why is everyone feeling so tired?
Vice points to a Gallup poll from last year, which indicated that the world is experiencing higher levels of sadness and stress than ever before. The culprits? The ongoing pandemic, economic uncertainties and a seemingly relentless cycle of negative news.
Adding fuel to the fire, a poll from Future Forum revealed that workplace burnout due to stress is at an all-time high.
We don’t have all the solutions to these complex problems. Many of us are grappling with the rising cost of living while juggling energy-draining jobs, sometimes giving more than we have to offer. And the numbers don’t lie – exhaustion is on the rise.
While a nap won’t solve all these problems, you absolutely deserve it. Take care, rest up and remember that you’re not alone in your quest for a little more energy and a lot less fatigue.
