We are excited to hear that Cape Town has made top 20 on the Timeout Index quiz 2022 and has been listed as the 11th best city in the world. Just close to making it to top 10. The results are based on the city’s hiking spots, food, cultures, beaches, and nightlife.
Cape Town has outranked major cities like New York, London, Tokyo, and Lisbon amongst others. Making it easier for citizens and visitors to explore and do it all.

The theme of this year focused on cities that aren’t boring or overly expensive or overrated, and also who scored well for practical stuff like walkability, good public transport and safety.
However, while the ranking is great news for tourism, the reality for the majority of people who call the city home is not that great. Unemployment and poverty have played a major role in contributing to the country’s crime rate.
According to Deloitte, in 2021, forty-seven percent of South Africa’s millennials listed unemployment as their leading concern, while 32% listed crime and safety as well as corruption within business and politics. But for their global peers, their concerns were health and disease prevention, expressed by 28%, followed by unemployment (27%) and climate change and the environment (26%).
While in 2022 and first quarter of the year, unemployment showed it was highest among those aged 15 to 24 years (63.9%) and 25 to 34 years (42.1%). Some 3.8 million out of 10.2 million people aged 15 to 24 years were not in employment, education or training.
