The man accused of burning the parliament building in Cape Town in 2022 had an outburst in the City’s High Court on Thursday, saying he did it on purpose and would burn another building.

Zandile Christmas Mafe shouted from the dock during his pre-trial hearing in front of media and court officials, saying that he wanted ‘white people out of this land’. He has been held in the hospital section of Pollsmoor Prison for several weeks, Times Live reports.

Although Mafe’s initial psychiatric assessment determined that he suffered from schizophrenia, the finding was declared unlawful. The hearing held on Thursday morning was meant to reveal the outcome of a second evaluation.
He faces charges of housebreaking with intent to commit terrorism and arson, terrorism, arson and theft, and has been in custody since 2 January last year, when a fire gutted the National Assembly building in Cape Town.
