The Nyanga Community Policing Forum (CPF) says the killing of law enforcement officers has become the norm in society and has appealed to the state to implement stringent laws against perpetrators.

‘South Africa is becoming a banana republic for criminals,’ says Dumisani Qwebe, Nyanga CPF secretary. ‘Last month, two police officers were gunned down in Khayelitsha in separate incidents. The other officer was shot and killed at Tshuku Street in Site C while the second officer was shot and killed at Mandela Park in Khayelitsha.
‘Both officers were off duty when the incidents occurred. We believe that an attack on our law enforcement officers is an attack on the state.’

The CPF’s comments follow a string of shootings in which members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other law enforcement agencies were killed. In the latest incident, an officer and the passenger in his car were ambushed at the corners of New Eisleben and Sheffield roads in Phillipi on Wednesday, 5 July. Both died on the scene.
As per News24, it is suggested that the suspects emerged from a white Toyota Avanza, went straight to the victim’s car and shot both occupants several times. The motive for the shooting is still unknown, and no arrests have been made.
A case of double murder was opened at the Philippi East Police Station pending further investigation by the Hawks. According to Lieutenant Colonel Malcom Pojie, provincial SAPS spokesperson, the officer who was killed was on leave at the time of the incident.
