According to police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg, police found the two officers with multiple gunshot wounds at the corner of Abonwabisi and Koornhof Streets in New Crossroads.
Reports indicate that the officers were driving in the street when they came under attack.
‘The victims were taken to medical facilities for treatment,’ added Twigg.
The officers are still in hospital and two counts of attempted murder were registered for investigation.
Twigg said the officers were stationed at Sea Point and Elsies River police station.
The MEC for police oversight and community safety, Reagen Allen, deemed the shooting of law enforcement personnel ‘highly disturbing and unacceptable,’ reported News24.
‘This latest incident shows the little regard criminals have for life. I regard an attack on any law enforcement officer as an attack on the state,’ added Allen.
This incident comes shortly after an off-duty City of Cape Town law enforcement officer was shot in the head in Hillview on Friday night.
Smith said it was the third shooting of a law enforcement officer in just over a month.
