Established in 2005, Gender DynamiX (GDX) is the first registered Africa-based public benefit organisation dedicated to advancing the rights of transgender and gender-diverse people.
Through years of grassroots activism and advocacy, GDX has evolved into an institutionalised non-profit organisation, playing a vital role in the development of the trans and gender-diverse movement across South Africa and the African continent.
With a vision of realising the full human rights of transgender and gender nonconforming people, GDX works tirelessly to challenge societal norms, promote inclusivity, provide education and training, and create meaningful change.
Building knowledge and raising visibility
Over the past 13 years, GDX has gathered a wealth of knowledge on the experiences, needs and rights of trans and gender diverse people. The team’s research and advocacy efforts have elevated the visibility of these communities locally, regionally and globally.
By focusing on legal reform, inclusive education and access to gender-affirming healthcare, GDX has become a leading voice in shaping policies and practices that positively impact the lives of transgender and gender diverse people.
Supporting the trans and gender diverse movement
In addition to its core objectives, GDX invests in and supports the emergence of trans-led organisations and initiatives. By providing technical assistance and organisational development support, GDX nurtures the growth of emerging organisations while fostering collaboration within the broader LGBTQ+ community in southern Africa.
GDX’s commitment extends beyond South Africa, working with partners in various areas of southern Africa, providing technical assistance with governmental processes and supporting the realisation of human rights.

A theory of change
GDX recognises the unique challenges faced by trans and gender diverse individuals in conservative legal and political systems, as well as adverse socio-economic circumstances.
From fear of self-expression and lack of legal recognition to marginalisation and exclusion from resources and services, these communities often endure discrimination and human rights violations.
GDX’s theory of change is centred around strategic themes, including advocacy and research, capacity enhancement and community access to direct services. By empowering communities, GDX aims to help them claim their rights, end injustices and drive positive change towards an inclusive society that embraces and celebrates gender diversity.

Focus on priority areas
To achieve its overarching goal of creating a society where gender diverse individuals can freely express themselves without prejudice, GDX focuses on key priority areas. These include improving the legal, medical and social situations of trans and gender diverse people in Southern African contexts.
Through research, advocacy and collaborative partnerships, GDX aims to enhance access to healthcare, and promote inclusive education for gender diverse learners. Additionally, GDX engages in international advocacy work, supporting regional organisations in their participation in the Universal Periodic Review* at the United Nations.
Strengthening leadership and governance
GDX understands the importance of effective operational procedures and sound governance structures. By ensuring that all structures serve both staff and the board, GDX strives to maintain its position as a reliable and efficient organisation.
This involves maintaining a voluntary board, creating an informed and accountable environment for staff, interns and volunteers, documenting internal procedures, developing work plans, managing organisational risks and promoting organisational learning and knowledge transfer.
