One of my favourite escapes from the bustle of life and torment of my restless mind (hey anxiety) is to visit a book store, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Robyn Simpson. It’s a nostalgic past time — a ritual introduced to me by my mom.
There’s an equal sense of tranquility and excitement that is almost overwhelming when I walk into a book shop. The colours and covers, the distinct smell of ink and paper, rows upon rows of printed perfection. I am a true nerd in this regard.
More often than not, I visit these paperback churches to roam rather than to purchase. And if allowed, a coffee in hand sends me straight to heaven.
Cape Town is home to some wonderfully unique book stores, perfect for picking up a page-turner or basking in a bit of you time. Here are three of my favourite unique book shops to visit.
Kalk Bay Books is an independent bookshop in the seaside village of Kalk Bay (my favourite suburb). It’s quaint and filled with a quality selection of new and used, local and international, contemporary fiction and non-fiction gems.
The setting is filled with stunning natural light. Pop in early to find a cosy spot and flip through the pages of whatever catches your eye. Grab a pick-me-up at any of the surrounding cafés or head to Dalebrook Tidal pool for a dip when you’re filled up on fantasy.

2. OBZ Books
Located in Cape Town’s quirkiest suburb, OBZ Books is the perfect place to get stuck into a heap of different reads. Pre-loved and brand new books are stocked to the max — there really is “something for everyone.” The shop is well-known for their vinyls and vintage comics.
One of the best things about this groovy spot is the little café located at the back of the store, which leads to an outdoor terrace. It’s perfect to settle down with a discovered treasure and enjoy a great coffee. The lighting is warm and welcoming, an element I always value.
- Location: 76 Lower Main Rd, Observatory, Cape Town
- Hours: 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday / 9am to 3pm on Sundays

Opened in 1957, Clarke’s Book Shop is a local treasure with a hearty history. What I love most about this spot is its homage to South African literature. They began specialising in Africana in the 1970s, making this a special hub to expand your appreciation for African talent.
Clarke’s is packed to the brim with old and new, African and general second hand and remaindered titles. The double-story delight is a must-visit for those on the hunt for not only a unique experience, but a slice of bookish history too.
- Location: 99 Long St, Cape Town City Centre, Cape Town
- Hours: 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday / 9.30am to 1pm on Saturdays / Closed on Sundays
