Mr Sandman bestows on the residents of Cape Town more than mere dreams. Lindokhule Innocent, a remarkably skilled local sculptor, has attained legendary status within the community by crafting extraordinary sand sculptures. You may have had the pleasure of encountering his illuminated boats, planes, or intricately designed sandcastles on beaches spanning from Camps Bay to Muizenberg and beyond.

One of his most recent innovations was built in Hout Bay for the locally and internationally celebrated pizzeria, Massimo’s.
It’s no secret that the Massimo’s team is as passionate about giving back to our community as they are about great pizza. Over the years, they’ve run various initiatives, such as the #PayitForward campaign, where clients buy virtual pizza slices with their orders, which are then gifted to those in need. Recently, they commissioned Innocent to put together a truly genius marketing campaign.
He designed and built a pizza oven made entirely of sand in Hout Bay for Massimo’s. He included the restaurant’s name and contact details and went so far as to put a real pizza in the oven. Far exceeding a poster, the work of art will no doubt have caught the attention of locals and visitors alike.
‘Supersandman’, as Innocent calls himself on Facebook, shared pictures of his work and further encouraged his followers to experience Massimo’s ‘delicious pizza’. It’s a truly wholesome example of collaboration and empowering local creatives and businesses.

Along with Massimo’s, Innocent is equally passionate about giving back to Cape Town. Not only does he adorn our beaches with eco-friendly art, but cleans up litter, too. ‘I clearly understand why we should not remove the seaweed from the beach. Two beautiful birds were busy on it this morning while [I was] picking [up] the dirt. For the sake of sealife, let us keep our beach clean and let nature take its place,’ he said on social media.

Unfortunately, people destroyed Innocent’s sand oven earlier this week. However, in response, the artist said that he ‘is sorry’ to those that did it. He added that he will continue to create sand art and that God will continue to provide for him.
