In a move towards promoting responsible tourism practices, the City of Cape Town’s Tourism and Place Marketing Branch convened industry businesses at the World Travel Market Africa to sign the Responsible Tourism pledge.
This pivotal event was held at Africa’s largest travel trade show, showcasing tourism that not only captivates visitors but also enhances the well-being of local communities.
The signing of the pledge marks the beginning of a journey towards launching a new Responsible Tourism Charter later this year, aligning with the UN World Tourism Organisation’s 2024 theme of ‘Sustainable Journeys. Timeless Memories’.

The objectives of Cape Town’s Responsible Tourism initiative are comprehensive:
- Raise awareness about specific touchpoints outlined in the city’s charter
- Gather insights from businesses on integrating responsible tourism principles into daily operations
- Showcase Cape Town as a forward-thinking destination committed to responsible tourism
As part of this initiative, Cape Town recently conducted a Universal Access study, the results of which will be revealed during Tourism Month in September.
These insights will guide efforts to enhance universal access within the tourism industry, promoting responsible growth and contributing to sustainable development.
Embracing responsible tourism practices is expected to bring economic benefits to Cape Town. By prioritising sustainability and inclusivity, the city aims to create new economic opportunities and jobs, ensuring its status as a thriving destination for future generations.
