The air route between Cape Town and Johannesburg is one of the busiest and most reliable domestic routes in the world, according to a global ranking system.

The 2018 On-Time Airline & Airport Rankings has ranked the route among the world’s most popular routes like Mumbai to Delhi, Melbourne to Sydney and Los Angeles to San Francisco. The busiest and most reliable domestic route in the world is Jeju to Seoul Gimpo in South Korea.

The Cape Town to Johannesburg route has an average On-Time Performance of 86%, the report said, with Safair being the top performer on this route with a 90% OTP. Comair was second best with an 87% OTP, followed by SAA with 85% and Mango airlines on 80.

The route is the ninth busiest in the world, with nearly 32 000 passengers frequenting it. Noting an average OTP of 86%, that makes the route the second most reliable among the top 20.

Durban’s King Shaka International Airport was ranked as one of the top small airports in the world, with a coverage rate of 80% and an OTP of 86.6%. A small airport is categorised as having 2.5-million and 5-million departing passengers per year.
