Hout Bay’s very own Massimo’s is world famous for their delicious Italian food. Last year it lapped up the title of the best pizza in Africa. With the lockdown in place, sadly Massimo’s had to close up shop.

The Italian restaurant however has not closed its kitchen. Massimo, his wife Tracy and managers Anton and Chris have collaborated with Gracie – Love in a bowl and Community Cookup IY to feed those in need in Hout Bay during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Visited Massimo’s in Hout Bay, which is regarded as the best pizza place in Africa. And honestly I get it – I’m so damn happy right now

Through South African crowd funding platform backabuddy, Massimo set up a pay it forward page. The donated money has been used to buy vegetables, pasta, rice and other items in order to make healthy meals. These are then distributed into the surrounding communities. To date they have raised R157,579 of their R190,000 goal.

In a statement Massimo wrote, “Many people will be out of work, kids out of school (where they used to get the only meal for the day), infected will be stuck home. We need everyone’s help and we are already stretched by having to pay our staff at home and the rent. We can only do this with your help. We hope to give some support and show others this can be done with the collaboration of everyone.”

If you would like to support your local pizzeria in helping the community, you can head to the backabuddy page here.
