The streets of Green Point took the phrase ‘local is lekker’ to new heights this past Saturday, when the Green Point Fan Walk was splashed with colourful costumes, bigger-than-life floats, vibrant performances and pulsating energy at the Cape Town Carnival.

As part of this year’s theme, several floats and over 1 500 performers aimed to offer spectators a window into a world where ‘lekker’ is the law of the land, according to the Cape Town Carnival website.
‘Imagine a realm where the everyday and the extraordinary blend seamlessly – a technicolour savannah, a deep sea brimming with mythical creatures, a whimsical world made entirely of sweets and a vibrant landscapes of feathers and fynbos,’ the website read.
‘Each of these fantastical versions capture a different facet of “lekker” – the joy, the wonder, the exhilaration. They are the physical embodiment of the word of the word, translating our unique South African spirit into visual and sensory experiences that delight and inspire.’

Prior to the parade, the carnival villages came alive with food trucks, live acts and fantastical characters:
To kick things off, some of City’s Fire & Rescue Services were dispatched to the Cape Town Carnival as the temperature began to rise. But this time, as JP Smith said on Facebook, it was the firefighters that were bringing the heat:
Adding to the parade’s build-up, a quartet of mascots joined in to keep the spectators hyped up – even City’s Bingo made a special appearance:

Imagine having a ‘lekker’ Cape Town Carnival and not having YoungstaCPT perform ‘Just Be Lekker’ live on the Schweet float – thank goodness we don’t have to.
According to Instagram user @alexander_aitkenhead, who shared some snaps with us : ‘The Chinese team from the Shaolin Kung Fu Institute left us spellbound with their mesmerising performance, making us proud as our son showcased his skills.’
