On a sunny Thursday afternoon, we climbed the the stairs to the rooftop of Harvest Café in colourful Bo-Kaap and were rewarded with a magnificent view of our Mountain.

Here, we were introduced to an activity that binds together the best elements of a restaurant, café, bar and music venue through the game of boules (pronounced “bool”). Ross and Byron are the geniuses who created Let’s Talk Boules, a pop-up game suitable for all ages across the Mother City. According to them it’s, “the greatest game you never knew you needed”.

The cafe serves delicious drinks to refresh you on a hot day.

The traditional rules of boules have been modified to add a South African twist. One game of boules contains three rounds with two teams being able to score points in each round. The aim of the game is to throw your ball as close to the “jack” (a smaller red ball) as possible. If your ball hits the boundaries, it is out. At the end of the three rounds, the team with the most points wins.

This turned out to be an immense amount of fun. With a cold drink in hand, we bowled the day away, cheering each other on and laughing ourselves silly at our own poor efforts. Luckily, Byron was there to guide us every throw of the way.

It’s not as easy as it looks!
The view includes Lion’s Head.

This game is the perfect idea for your next occasion – birthday party, bachelors/bachelorette, catch-up with friends and family, team building or even a first date.

Jump fast, though! Let’s talk Boules is only running until April, 13 2020.

Find them on the rooftop of Harvest Cafe & Deli, 102 Wale Street.

This lovely pastime will only cost you R25 per game of 3 rounds – cheaper than a coffee in some places of the Mother City.
