Recently, Cape Town TikTok became populated with one familiar green face – Shrek the iconic ogre. As part of a feature on the app, people could place a dancing Shrek in a skin-tight suit rocking to various beats, and locals took up the opportunity to place him amid Cape Town landmarks – from mountains to the airport.

Was it all a great marketing scheme for ‘Shrek: The Musical’ set to hit the stage in Claremont very soon? Probably not, but the social media gimmick certainly reminded us of the ogre-love we might have forgotten since the Shrek franchises’ last release in 2010 with ‘Shrek Forever After’.
About the Musical:
Taking us back to the Kingdom of Far Away comes the heartwarming fairy tale of the couple that defied all odds, beauty standards and hierarchies, and of course the unsuspecting hero. This time all our favourite characters will make us laugh (and potentially tear up as any solid Shrek fan can attest to) in Claremont thanks to Herschel Girls School and Bishops Diocesan College. The schools are organising an epic comeback of the Tony-award winning hit and DreamWorks favourite.
The production is directed by Sarah McArthur and Wayne Tucker, choreographed by Roxy Levy and Lauren Hambly-Wise, and sports costume design by Roushan Schoonraadt and Jenny Stretch, with lighting design by Kieran Cattel.
