Stellenzicht’s story began with a discovery. As the vineyard’s soils were being prepared for replanting, the team stumbled upon strange-looking rocks that turned out to be Acheulean hand axes, artefacts from a period within the Stone Age when humans began crafting their own tools.
This discovery took on even greater significance when a title deed dating back to 1800 was unearthed, describing the property as ‘not good for crops, only cattle, too many rocks.’
It was at this moment that the team realised they were standing on soil steeped in history and heritage.
Stellenzicht Wine Pod preserves and nurtures the diverse microclimate soil pockets of Stellenzicht, stewarding what nature provides each year. Stellenzicht’s wines, true expressions of their terroir, bear witness to this commitment.
As custodians of the land, the estate embraces sustainable farming practices that create an ecosystem conducive to protecting the dragonfly population, fauna and flora. This philosophy of sustainability is woven into their daily activities, pointing to their unwavering pursuit of balance.
To honour the land’s history and existing soil compositions, the team invested considerable effort in identifying the soil types. This knowledge guides them in planting the right grape varieties on the ideal sites, allowing the vines to flourish within their natural terroir.
By aligning with nature’s cues and adjusting their farming and winemaking practices accordingly, Stellenzicht brings out the unique character of their soils and terroir in each grape and bottle.
The return of the dragonfly population to the farm serves as a testament to nature’s resilience and adaptability. These remarkable creatures symbolise Stellenzicht’s commitment to adapting when necessary in their quest for balance.
The Wine Pod, as the estate’s brand home, perfectly embodies their sustainability ethos. Built with 80% recyclable materials and no concrete foundations, it allows nature to thrive alongside it.
The concept of the pod offers visitors a truly immersive experience where they can savour award-winning Stellenzicht wines while surrounded by the beauty of the natural world.
‘From the earth, through the berry, to your glass. Enjoy a distinctive range that is none other than Stellenzicht.’
Within its selection, two gems shine: The Acheulean Red and Chardonnay. The Acheulean Red is a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Syrah and 15% Cinsault. It captivates from the first sip with a bold entrance, integrating oak and rich red and black fruits woven into a mesh of velvety, finely textured tannins that demand the palate’s full attention.
The Chardonnay awakens all of the senses. The nose leads the way with a symphony of fresh stone fruit and citrus notes. The wine’s zesty minerality and lively acidity are derived from its maturation in amphora clay vessels. Delicate oak undertones join forces with a playful array of aromatics to create a harmonious and balanced Chardonnay experience.
For those who cherish the classics, the old faithful await. The Arenite Syrah, Tristone Cabernet Sauvignon and Silcrete Cinsault have stood the test of time.
These wines are a testament to simplicity and authenticity, offering an experience that is, quite simply, a direct connection to the earth itself.
But the Stellenzicht Wine Pod is not just about wine; it’s also a culinary treat. Handmade pizzas, carefully crafted to complement their wines, are a highlight.
If a pizza is not on your craving card, nothing pairs more perfectly than a crisp glass of Stellenzicht rosé with a charcuterie board. The smoky selection of meats and creamy cheeses balances beautifully with the wine’s acidity.
For those with a sweet tooth, Stellenzicht is renowned for its pastel de natas. These custard pastries, often described as heavenly, are a must-try on your visit to the Wine Pod, whether you’re stopping by for coffee or a tasting.
Stellenzicht stands as a beacon of sustainable viticulture, a keeper of history and a purveyor of top-notch food offerings.
Stellenzicht Wine Pod invites you to embark on a journey where history, nature and wine meet to create an unforgettable experience that awakens the senses and nourishes the soul.
