At 2pm this afternoon, Gielie Basson of Calitzdorp etched his name into the annals of history by shattering the ‘Guinness World Record’ for the longest braai, an astounding 80 hours of continuous coal stirring.
But Basson isn’t ready to leave his post; he’s determined to push on until 6pm this evening to achieve his personal goal of 84 hours.

When the clock marked 58 hours, Basson told Cape {town} Etc: “My voice hurts a bit, and I’m a little bit tired. I’ve had about one and a half hours of sleep in a total of 56 hours thus far. It’s going well.”
Despite the mounting physical challenges, Basson found a second wind, and the 84-hour mark is undoubtedly within reach. It’s possible that he might even continue after his personal record is reached!
Basson’s first batch of braaivleis was donated to Calitzdorp Police Station, and the following batches were to be given to the Vygieshof residential care home and the Calitzdorp Feeding Centre, a local soup kitchen.
