The first Thursday of every month is a special time in the Mother City. The epic event that is First Thursdays has gripped the hearts and minds of every culture-seeking Capetonian – or anyone looking for a good vibe!
Despite the chilly air that winter brings along with it, this First Thursday you’ll be able to warm your heart and soul with an extra special exhibition in District Six.
While First Thursdays has lured in every resident, traveller, or curious bystander with a promise of a ‘good time,’ at its core, this popular event is all about spreading the love for local artists as we celebrate their talent, and the exhibition at District Six is no different.
Curated by Beathur Mgoza Baker and Sara Bint Moneer Khan, it explores the beautiful homecoming of artists to this historic area.
The exhibition is set to explore themes around ‘visibility, a safe passage and creating a homecoming away from home that welcomes diverse identities from across Africa to commune and coexist under one roof in Cape Town.’
To play on this idea of coming home, the exhibition has been named after the themes and venue, which is aptly named Homecoming and is an extension of the District Six Museum.
An array of incredibly talented visual artists, filmmakers, cultural thinkers, and performers will be joining and exploring the ‘conversation’ around Africans and their place in various spaces, including the world.
The exhibition “creates a space for dialogue and sharing at a time when our country is struggling to provide Africans with a sense of belonging – bringing them together as a community at the salon.”
A beautiful visual exhibition that should definitely not be missed this First Thursdays, 2 June, check out the full list of artists here.
- Location: 15 Buitenkant Street, District Six
