Continuous rainfall over the past few weeks has caused fluctuations in water table levels at certain cemeteries, which may have an impact on operations in the near future.
While this is not an unprecedented occurrence, the current weather conditions have exacerbated the situation.

‘I think we can all agree that this has been a very wet start to winter, and the impacts have been felt all around. Unfortunately, our cemeteries are not exempt, and we are working to manage the situation as best as possible,’ said mayoral committee member for community services and health, Councillor Patricia Van der Ross.
She continued, ‘The Recreation and Parks Department has implemented mitigation measures, and the City appreciates the understanding and cooperation of families, mourners and undertakers during this time.’

Undertakers and grieving families are advised to:
- Be aware that, depending on the water table levels at a particular cemetery, it may be necessary to prepare shallower graves. This limitation may prevent the burial of a second coffin in the same private grave.
- Exercise extreme caution as parking areas, roads and pathways may be flooded or slippery due to weather conditions.
- Wear appropriate weatherproof clothing and non-slip footwear to minimise the risk of slipping.
- Arrive promptly for the burial and adhere to the designated 30-minute time slot to alleviate parking congestion.
- Consider limiting the number of attendees, particularly during inclement weather.
- Handle coffins with care and maintain a safe distance from open graves.
- Opt for weekday burials to reduce overcrowding in cemeteries on weekends.
- It is important to note that the City reserves the right to advise against reopening a family grave in areas severely affected by waterlogging. In such cases, alternative grave sites or cemeteries may be recommended.
