In a display of courage and compassion, a snake handler and her son have emerged as heroes after rescuing a variety of reptiles from floodwaters in Rietvlei, Table View.
The heavy rains that recently battered the area caused flooding in several parts, including the overflowing of Rietvlei.
Davine Sansom, the skilled snake handler, received a distress call from a friend who spotted reptiles clinging to a fence near the embankment along the R27. Without hesitation, Davine and her son André sprang into action.

Davine Sansom explained on Facebook that their rescue mission involved capturing ten skinks, one legless skink, four brown water snakes, three mole snakes, thirty-three skaapstekers and ten chameleons.
Their courageous efforts came at a price. While attempting to save the largest skaapsteker, Davine suffered a snakebite and had to reluctantly leave the snake behind as her hands were already occupied with other reptiles.
The demanding task was further complicated by freezing waters, requiring them to navigate treacherous depths and even swim in certain areas.
The bone-chilling coldness of the water eventually caused Davine to lose feeling in her feet, resulting in several falls. Fortunately, André was there to assist her, rescuing her from the mud on two occasions. Game rangers joined the rescue efforts, utilising a rubber duck to capture additional snakes and chameleons.
After completing their initial mission, they received another call to Grebe Avenue, where they encountered three more snakes – a pair of skaapstekers and a feisty mole snake.
Davine extended her heartfelt gratitude to everyone who lent their assistance, made donations or went out of their way to support their rescue efforts. She particularly expressed appreciation to a generous lady who delivered two pizzas and a drink.
